South West Coast Path - Exmouth to Sidmouth

This was the first stage of 10 days walk along the Jurassic Coast section of the South West Coast Footpath between Exmouth and Poole. Unlike previous National Trail undertakings where I have walked using accommodation en route, this one, due to logistics of getting to and from the start and end, was going to based around 3 base camps using public transport to get to and from each days start and end point.

Date of Walk: 2010-06-18

Start point: Exmouth Bus Station

End Point: Salcombe Regis Camp Site

Start Time:13:00

End time: 19:00 (Sidmouth), 22:00 (Salcombe Regis) - stopped at Sidmouth for England vs Algeria World Cup Footbal Match

Distance: 16 miles

Walkers: Griffmonster, Kat

Weather conditions: Bright sunshine with some high cloud and very warm

Path taken: Followed the South West Coasstal Footpath.

Pubs:
  • The Feathers, Budleigh Salterton. (http://www.feathers-hotel.co.uk/) Four local ales to choose from. Excellent beer and friendly staff;
  • Marine, Sidmouth - I have never seen so many TVs in a pub as this one hosted - whether this was merely for the occasion of the World Cup or just standard decor, I do not know. From the exterior, the place looked a like a chavvy lager bar but on closer inspection they had two local ales on tap, both of which were very drinkable after a days walking. Just a pity about Englands performance against Algeria. Worse performance of an England side ever in my opinion.

Notes:  We arrived in Salcombe early and the site allowed us pitch up before the scheduled arrival time which meant we got the earlier bus through to Exmouth. The weather and terrain set the agenda for the week - bright sunshine and a lot of hills. The going was moderate to strenuous for us people from the flat lands of East Anglia but the views were magnificent. We stopped off in Sidmouth for the football then attempted to return to base camp as the light faded. This final part of the walk was through the woods which, without a torch was, difficult. The final mile we took to the road  for better navigation. Must remember to include the torch in the rucksack!

Equipment: 40L rucksack as a daypack - Panasonic camera

Accommodation: Salcombe Regis Camp Site (http://www.salcombe-regis.co.uk/)

  1. I did this with a mad German Shepherd who was about to not go off the cliff in any way in the strong wind we met
